I remember the first time I ate at Bernie’s 3 years ago, when their yellow school bus made a stop right outside my then office during lunch hours(felt like we were skipping school). I was reminded of my younger years( people usually laugh when I say that), when we’d stand in a designated area of the neighborhood waiting for the bus. Although this time it was different, the bus was waiting for us, we all got in a single filed line to order from the school bus. The bus looked just like your average yellow school bus, minus the unexpected “pimp my ride” additions.
Bernie’s Burger invited on a little field trip(happy hour) event at their new school(location) in the Heights, where I met up with my food blogging industry friends and also met some new ones over great burgers, fries, cocktails and shakes. Yes, Chef Turner pull out all the books for this field trip!
This new opening marks the return of the original Bernie’s Burger Bus to one of the neighborhoods where the food truck was originally parked. The bus was once again “pimped” to serve as the kitchen where guests can see Bernie’s teachers(employees) flipping burgers and shakes daily. Continuing with the theme, this location has a bar known as the “Teacher’s Lounge” where refreshing cocktails and beers will be served, as well as plenty more seats and a pet-friendly patio so your four-legged friend won’t feel left out.

Bernie’s is one of my favorite burger joints in Houston, probably the second spot I recommend to anyone who asks. You won’t go wrong with the burgers on the menu but, I highly recommend The Substitute burger(see a picture on instagram), which consists of a bleu cheeseburger, with thick crispy bacon, burgundy mushrooms and drunken onions(wild right?). And as for extra-curriculars, I recommended the Truffle-Laced Hand
Cut Fries or if you’re good, the Honor Roll Fries– You won’t able to keep your fingers away. I also recommend taking a trip down to the teacher’s lounge for a little extra fun and ordering their Grapefruit Paloma. Then off course, you can end your field trip with a boozy shake, try their Chocolate + Coconut. Now, I think that should all leave you with an A+ grade average!
